We pack our bags and take with us...

Please find here our preparations!
Here we present the preparation of our bikes, needed documents, insurances etc.

Motorcycle alteration:

April 2004: Tommy starts the alteration of the Dakars.

Streetfighter Dakar

Placing the petrol conduit for the tank conversion kit. Mounting of engine protector, chain guard/wheel sensor cover, sprocket cover and mounting kits.

May 2004: Purchasing a second-hand GPS (Garmin GPSmap176) at eBay and being anxious for the first test. At the moment we're poring over the instruction manual…

June 2004: The bracket for the GPS is normally attached at the cross-tie of the handle bar, but this is impossible when applying tank bags at the same time. Therefore Tommy mounted a separate cross-tie made from aluminium into the wind shield. To avoid breaking of the wind shield, the cross-tie is elastically supported by rubber.Tommy integrated an extra cross-tie (from the middle of the aluminium tube to the upper screw of the armature cover) to decrease vibrations.
This is the optimal position, because the GPS is in the direct vision range. You don't have to look down and therefore you've got the road always under control!

GPS-Halterung GPS-Halterung

July 2004: Tommy was really hard-working and his Dakar is now altered completely! At first he mounted the tank conversion kit, which was kindly varnished for free by Thomas Seidel (see "sponsors") This was quite a good deal of work, because the precision of the parts was in no relation to the price…Anyway, we're glad that we've afforded the tank conversion kit: The cruising range is enormous with a tank volume of 39 litres and the Dakar doesn't look like a starving calf anymore, but as grown-up cow ;-))It even sounds more adult because Tommy mounted the exhaust system without catalytic converter, which we've bought from Sima (see "links"). For low octane and plumbiferous fuel, it´s better to mount an Exhaust system without catalytic converter! We asked at BMW, if we have to make other changes to the bikes to allow them to run on low quality fue. Since 2002 the electronic control unit is reprogrammed, so you don´t have to change your bike. If you´ve got a bike, which year of manufacture is older than 2002, you can go to BMW to reprogram the ECU and mounted also an exhaust system without catalytic converter.

Tommy´s Dakar Tommy´s Dakar

Besides this Tommy assembled the chain lubrication system we've got from CLS for a very good price (see "sponsors"). We didn't gain any practical experience with it so far, but the supplied material is excellent quality. The mounting guidelines, the packing - everything top!

We never liked the inclined position of the Dakars on their lateral uprights so Tommy modified it by extending the lateral uprights for 9 cm. The first modification of the lateral uprights you can see on the following picture (right hand) wasn´t very good, because of less ground clearance.

October/ November 2004: The wider foot rests you can buy are very expensive. Therefore Tommy modified the original foot rests broadening with bulb plate for better standing and less vibrations.

Fußrasten

Also we prepared our motorcycles for hibernation and the trip: New chains, oil change, change of brake fluid, new tyres and tubes.
We mounted at the aluminium pannier set additional bags (Rosa) and plastic containers respectively (Tommy). Though the bags and containers have approved while the trip, we threw them away, because we reduced our luggage. The bikes have been way to heavy!

Seitentasche Rosas bags

Behälter Tommy Behälter Tommy Tommys containers

February 2005: Our Dakars got a protection for the compression leg and protectors for the yoke.
Federbeinschutz Gabelschutz

Furthermore we had longer PTFE steel braided brake lines because of the Handlebar Risers. Thanks to www.fischer-hydraulik.de !!!

February/ March 2005: Rosa´s Daddy constructed lockable and water resistant aluminium tool boxes!! Thank you very much, Päps!!

Werkzeugbox

March 2005:

Tommy converted bicycle roof racks to spare tyre mountings. With this mounting you can load and unload the bike without taking the tyres off. That facilitate daily packing! The packsacks on seat and pack rack contain tent, compact mattresses, sleeping bags, camping seats and some clothes. Without this mounting we would have to take off the tyres each time. Because of the additional weight we threw them away in the Death Valley in California, though it was a great idea and a very practical thing - but it was one of the days we serched through our baggage to reduce weight...

Off-road course (Rosa):

At June 26, 2004 I've attended an off-road course to lose my fear of off-raod tracks… (Tommy doesn't need a course at all because he rides his motorbike in a firm and secure way on all kinds of surfaces.)

www.stehlin-motorradtraining.de The course was carried through by Stehlin motorcycle trainings at a terrain next to Kenzingen (near Freiburg). Some participants came from very far because an excellent workout terrain like this is very rare. Above all the instructors do their work with a lot of fun and engagement! You can tell by that that it isn't only money they are working for. The participants learned a lot: Braking until the wheels will jam, shifting of weight when navigating up, down and along a steep hill, riding through very close curves, turn-over at a hill...

Rosa mit ihrer Dakar Schotterpässe und 90°Kurven: Alles kein Problem mehr! Das 1. Mal kostet Überwindung... Beim 2. Mal macht es tierisch Spaß!!

The course was a great experience and it will help me very much!

Unfortunately June, 26 2004 is beard in mind by another incidence, that makes us very, very blue: Tommy's brother Jürgen was killed in an accident at the same day.

Immunisations:

An interesting website which offers a lot of information about travel medicine: www.travelmed.de

Basic vaccinations for longer trips are tetanus, polio and diphtheria immunisations. (combined in one injection, lingers for about 10 years)
We were vaccinated in March/ April 2004. We were additionally vaccinated against FSME (Immunisation against an encephalitis which appears in early summer and is caused by ticks). Lingers for about 3 years.

Hepatitis A and B:

For the trip it is reasonable to start the Hepatitis vaccination (A more important than B).

Hepatitis A:Infectious jaundice, is transferred through excrements, drinking water, food
Vaccine: Hafrix
a) 3 injections within 12 months, lingers for about 10 years. Costs: 60 EUR per injection (in Germany)
Alternative:
b) 2 injections every 6 months (prevention for 10 years)

Hepatitis B: Infective jaundice, infection by contact with blood or virulent person. Basic immunisation: 2 injections every 4 weeks and refreshment after 6 months, lingers for about 10 years.

Combined immunisation Hepatitis A and B:
Active agent: Twinrix, 2 injections every 4-6 weeks and refreshment after 6-12 months, costs about 180 EUR (in Germany)

Immunisation against yellow fever:

Only one injection, lingers for 10 years, expenses around 30 EUR (in Germany). You have to ask your doctor about the waiting time after some other vaccinations.

Typhus immunisation:

a) Oral vaccination: 3 pills within 5 days, prevention for one year, expenses around Eur 20 (in Germany)
Alternative:
b) One injection, active agent: Typhim, prevention for 1 to 3 years, for people with high risk refreshment after one year, expenses around 20 EUR (in Germany)

Malaria:

Unfortunately there is no vaccination.
Very complex, prophylaxis addicted to a concrete destination. It is the best to consult a tropical institute or health office. Reasonablely keep a quick test for Malaria with you (MalaQuick, 2 Tests ca. 40 EUR). In general either stand-by medication or prophylaxis and of course prevention against mosquito bites.

Thanks to Alex for the information on vaccination!

Insurances:

Health Insurance and Accident Insurance are actually the most important insurances. In Germany the most health insurances for abroad are valid only for 45 days. So you need a special insurance. Some insurance carrier you find at "Links..insurances"
We took note of: Have you payed more for female or older age? Is it allowed to work? Some Insurances exlude it. Stay in USA more expensive like other countries? Short holidays in homeland included? And you should read accurately the fine print...
We decided in favor of the "First-Class" of Site Insurance (You can find the Website at "Links..Insurances"). For the cost of 39,- Euro per month there is also an accident insurance and a private liability insurance included! We hope, that was the right decision. We´ll see, when we need their help..
We will not cancel our existent Accident Policy. You don´t know, what could happen... Also the motor third party insurances won´t be cancelled, though they valid only in Europe. But the costs are not very high..On the way we´ll take out motor third party insurances preferably at the border of the respective country.

Documents/ Money:

Information on specific to countries you can find at Informations about the countries

As a matter of course you take along the identity card, passport, driving licence, vehicle registration certificate and Green insurance card (although only valid in Europe)

All documents scanned and recorded at server and laptop/ CD and blue prints for our parents. Blue prints we keep seperate from the original.

We gave authority to our parents for public authorities and bank.

The following information apply to Germany. We don´t know, how it works in other countries.

Passport:
It's possible to obtain a second passport! That's important to enter Israel, for example. When entering Israel the custom officer searches the passport for rubber stamps of Arabian states. If they discover any you'll have quite a problem to enter the state. This is no more a problem when having two passports. Just use one passport for Israel, the other one for the Arabian states. We are not up to enter Israel, but it's soothing to have two passports! It can also be helpful if you apply for a visa and have to send in your passport...We've applied for the second passport at the beginning of May. The price was Eur 13. That's half of usual price you have to pay for passport in Germany. Period of validity: 5 years, just half as long as the first passport. It wasn't a problem to apply for the passport. We just had to give a short written statement why we need a second one.

Visum: For the first section we yet secured us the visa before the trip: Ukraina and Russia.
The cheapest one was the visa for Ukraina: 60,- Euro per person. It valids for 6 months. Russia: We've bought a business visa for 6 months. Price: 410,- Euro per person. You need an invitation for business visa. The invitaion must be from a company, which residents in Russia. Mongolia: Visa for 3 months.

Information on specific to countries you can find at Informations about the countries

International Driving Licence:

Should you take along...

International Vehicle Registration Certificate:

Some say you need it, others say no. Anyway we take it along.

Carnet de Passage: Carnet de Passage is a custom document for your vehicle. Some countries demand for it for free entry. You can use it for several countries and it´s valid only for one year. In Germany you can get it at automobil clubs like www.adac.de. You have to pay charges and deposit bailment as security.

Money:

We´ve got "EC- Cards" and credit- cards (Visa- and Mastercard) and always some hard cash (USD and Euro)and respective national currency, evenly distributed in different money bags.

Other things in preparation time:

On May 18th, 2004 we were at a slide show shown by Claudia Metz and Klaus Schubert, who were on the road with their motorbikes for 16 years! We were absolutely enthused and our wanderlust is bigger then ever!

Another event fuelled our wanderlust, too: The visit of sima, two globetrotters from Zurich, who visited us before driving home.
Gemütlicher Abend Fachsimpelei Sima´s letzte Etappe

A little assortment of their given hints:
  • It's desperate to mount a chain lubrication system. That multiplies the durability of the chain
  • Use petrol filters - first of all because of the bad petrol in Russia
  • Hide your GPS at border lines! In some countries GPS' are seen as military instruments an therefore forbidden. It is possible that the GPS will be confiscated.
  • Copy or scan all your papers like passport or driving licence, than print them out and laminate them. When police is controlling you -which can be several times a day in some countries- just show the copies. Most of the time they don't even realise that these are only copies and accept them.
